Fall Rambles

Harvest Festival at Smith's Castle

Fall is a great time to explore Rhode Island with kids and to learn about its many unique places. Harvest festivals are a classic part of the New England fall experience and provide a great chance to interact with historic places. Recently several sites participating in the Rhody Ramble held harvest festivals which incorporated traditional activities. Pictured above is an outdoor cooking activity at Smith's Castle in Wickford.

Celebrations of the season continue with spooky themed walking tours at the Old Washington County Jail on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings in October. The Haunts of Little Rest Hill explore the jail cells and other colonial landmarks of the c. 1700 Kingston Village on a 75 minute walking tour. The one-mile tour is offered at 7:30 and 9:30 each evening (except on Thursdays, when only the 7:30 tour is held). The earlier tour is recommended for younger guests, but is probably not appropriate for very young children. Reservations are recommended; call (401) 783-1328.

The Rhody Ramble helps families explore sites ranging from historic mansions to working farms, along the way finding out what makes these places distinctly Rhode Island. With most admission prices under $10 and several free events, the activities are designed to be affordable for families. Check out a complete list of fall events and tours at RhodyRamble.org.
